“A book of sacrifice, of love, despair, of so many lifetimes now lost, and the abiding faith humanity possesses in its darkest moments. Is this the most meaningful cookbook I have ever read and cooked from? I can’t think of one more important." — Andrew Zimmern

James Beard Award-winning chef Alon Shaya, who spearheaded the Rescued Recipes initiative with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and his co-author, Jewish culinary historian June Hersh, join us to talk about their new book, Memories of a Good Meal: Recipes of Resilience Inspired by Stories of World War II Survival, in conversation with three-time James Beard Award winner and bestselling author Dan Pashman, host of The Sporkful podcast. Inspired by the experiences of Holocaust survivors and WWII heroes, the book celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit through the transformative power of food. Hear the story of the small French town that rallied to save – and feed – thousands of children during the Holocaust, and others. From humble potatoes eaten by a Polish partisan fighter to dreams of warm hotcakes in a German POW camp, food as survival inspired Shaya’s recipes and fueled the stories he recounts — and his belief in the essential nourishment of both body and soul.
