3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesday featuring Lauren Engelman and David Berliner
Loving Lillian: Lillian Berliner’s Extraordinary Story of Survival and Resilience
Wednesday, August 13 | 8:00pm ET | On Zoom
Join us on August 13 for the next installment of our popular WEDU Wednesday series as siblings and 3GNY volunteers, Lauren Engelman and David Berliner, share the story of their grandmother, Lillian Berliner.
Lillian Berliner was born in Cluj, Romania in 1925 and had a beautiful childhood full of Montessori school, ice skating and skiing in the winter and had a high school sweetheart. Her family lived an upper middle class life and Jews were largely assimilated (to Hungary, at the time) and loyal to their leaders. In 1944, when Transylvania was annexed back to Hungary, Lillian was transported to Auschwitz with her family from the ghetto they were living in. By a miracle, she and her mother were selected for Bremen Labor Camp and then liberated from Bergen Belsen in 1945. After Liberation, Lillian worked as a translator in the DP Camps, met her husband, and then eventually came to the United States to start her family. Lillian lived a full and extraordinary life, marked by both her resilient survival, but also by her family and her prolific career in social work administration. Although her early life was marked by hardship, she lived her later years surrounded by love and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
